Tiger Woods Doesn't Have to Talk to the Cops

I love it when celebrities get in trouble. No, I am not a paparazzi lover or a huge pop culture fan. What I am is a Seattle criminal defense attorney, and as a criminal lawyer I often have clients walk in the door that have done exactly the opposite of what you should do when you find yourself confronted with the police officers asking you questions. Many celebrities, because of their resources and staff, are able to learn how to deal with police before they have to, or at least have the people to get them away from the situation until they can decide what the best thing to do is.

Last weekend we had a perfect example of what you should do if you find yourself in a spot of trouble. The great example? Tiger Woods. We don't know much about what happened the night of his accident except this: (1) Tiger left his house at about 2:25 a.m.; (2) on his way out he hit a fire hydrant and a tree; and (3) he cut his face and had to be taken to the hospital. That is it. And do you know why we don't know anything more? Because he isn't talking to the police or running his mouth to his friends about it.

The tabloids are going crazy with this story because they believe the accident was the result of a fight between Tiger and his wife over a possible affair he was having. Some are speculating (purely speculating) that the cuts on his face were from his wife and not the car accident. No one really knows what happened and Tiger isn't talking so no one really knows what to do, including the police.

Because no one is talking, the police only know those three things listed above. And Tiger was smart enough to hire a criminal attorney who told him not to talk to the cops, so the only information they are going to have is that information above. Based on that information there is no evidence of domestic abuse by anyone, there is no evidence of any crime being committed. There is only evidence of a traffic infraction, probably careless driving or something like that. And that is exactly the way that Tiger wants it.

So, next time you find yourself in trouble with the law or investigated by the law, shut your mouth and talk to a criminal lawyer. They can tell you what you should do to make the situation come out the best for you. And they can help you navigate the false information and intimidation tactics police officers will sometimes employ to get you to talk. The best thing you can do is limit the information that is out there. People may think you're hiding something, but that is a small price to pay in comparison to criminal charges.
