Even the best Seattle DUI attorneys face an uphill battle with every single DUI case they help someone with. Our profession is a true underdog story. With the advent of mothers against drunk driving, students against drunk driving, and everyone else against drunk driving, the laws on driving after drinking have become so restrictive as to make every case an uphill battle. (Just FYI, I am against drunk drivers and drunk driving, the problem I have is with people being accused of drunk driving not because of bad driving but because they can't walk a line heel to toe.)

Practicing criminal defense is a challenging career path. You are constantly fighting uphill battles, you are constantly working with bad facts and bad law, and in every single case you have someone's livelihood on the line (it wouldn't be a criminal case if there wasn't any jail time as a possibility). This can make even the most hardened Seattle DUI defense attorney a little bit anxious when it comes to fighting the good fight. But there is a reason to stand up and fight.

I don't know that I ever planned to be a Seattle DUI attorney, or a criminal attorney at all for that matter. Sure, it looked cool on the movies, and it seemed like it would be pretty fun to fight the cops, but I never really thought to myself "I want to do that." But here I am. And now that I am, I see it takes a pretty special breed of person to do it well. So, if you are thinking about becoming a DUI lawyer or criminal defense lawyer, here are some of the things I think you'll need.

Almost all of us have, at one time or another, gotten behind the wheel and driven home after having a drink or two. And the good thing about it, is that this is okay. When things can go seriously wrong is when you get pulled over by a cop after having those couple drinks. If that happens, then there is a chance that you will be fighting for your freedom, and need a Seattle DUI attorney to help.

If you have been charged with a Seattle DUI, chances are it is the first time you've ever been in much trouble. As a Seattle DUI defense attorney, I find that most of my clients are normal people who, for whatever reason, find themselves facing a DUI charge. They aren't bad people. They aren't alcoholics. They just made a bad decision (or got in the path of an overzealous cop) and are now trying to figure out how to move on with their life.

To start off, I am a Seattle DUI lawyer. That means I defend people charged with DUI in the Seattle area. And I'm pretty good. But, for the most part, I am limited by the facts before me and how those facts jive with the law. And you are the one that gives me the facts. The things you do and say create the set of circumstances that I have to work with for your DUI case. And, because I want to give you the best chance at success possible, and I want, as your Seattle DUI attorney, to have the opportunity to get your case dismissed outright, I am going to tell you some of the things, three in fact, that you can do to help me help you win your case. In case you didn't know, the law, and criminal defense law in particular, are constantly changing. This is because of two factors: first, State Legislatures are constantly coming up with new laws to mess with people and changing old laws because they were broken; and second, criminal defense attorneys are constantly challenging the new (and old) laws, poking holes in them, and forcing the government and the police to recognize and uphold an individual's Constitutional rights.
