Starting a Law Firm | Setting Goals so You Meet Them
One of the first things you'll notice when you are starting up a law firm is that there is no one there to watch you. If you want to go sit in your office all day and twiddle your thumbs, you can do that. The only person that will know is you (and your banker). But if you are setting out on your own, my guess is you don't want to do this anyway. So how do we get things done?
As 2010 rolls around, the obvious answer is to set goals. You need to give yourself a list of things you want to do so you have something to be constantly working toward. And these goals should include professional as well as personal things. Want to take a trip to Fiji this year? Figure out how to do it. For example, one of my personal goals is to play golf at least once a week when the weather gets nicer. To do that, I'm going to have to make enough money to play and manage my calendar well enough to get free.
Once you have these lofty goals set, the next step, and the most important step, is breaking them down into manageable parts that can be accomplished one step at a time. This ensures two things: You are constantly working to a tangible goal and you are constantly reinforcing yourself with positive feedback since you are accomplishing your "mini-goals".
For example, my golf goal will entail figuring out how much money it's going to cost to play every week. That is step one. Step two is setting up my calendar to make sure the time is there. Step three is figuring out how to pull in the extra income every week to make the goal happen. And then I can start to meet those goals and move on to other things.
Starting a law firm is a great thing to do. And you can be successful. It takes hard work, clear goals, and a powerful resolve, but in no time you'll be the successful business owner you always wanted to be. Happy New Year!
