Rubik 360 & Other Rubik Games – A Check List For Parents

Rubik's puzzles are always a popular gift. They are hugely successful and well known. Earlier this year, a new version was added to the long list of previous successes, the Rubik 360. This spherical puzzle is expected to be very popular and has already been in short supply in many stores. If you want to spend many frustrating hours going crazy with a Rubik's cube or be adventurous and try their latest ball shaped offering, here is a quick check list to ensure you buy the right one.

  • If you are new to Rubik's puzzles, the original cube is probably the best place to start. It is the smallest cube with only 9 coloured squares on each side. The aim of the game is to mix up the puzzle by twisting and turning it and then to try and get it back to one solid colour on each face.
  • If you want a puzzle with an easy to find solution, again the original cube is for you. Each toy comes with a seven step solution guide. Alternatively you could view one of the 40,000 solution videos avid fans have posted on YouTube.
  • Should you be a Rubik's cube pro, matching the record for completing it blindfolded in under a minute, the next step up 4×4 Revenge Cube will be a good choice. It is much trickier and requires new techniques to solve. The main difference to master between this and the original cube is the fact that you need to get your centres sorted first. Previously these were fixed but in a 4×4 cube they are not.
  • If you find Cube's to be yesterday's news, check out the new spherical Rubik 360. This is more of a physics challenge than the math related problem of the cube. You need to handle the sphere correctly to steer the six coloured balls through two internal spheres to the outside edge. There is a pod on this outer wall of a matching colour waiting for your ball. This may sound easy but it is not. The internal spheres spin in different ways and the holes they contain for the balls to pass through have weights opposite to them. This means that the balls you are trying to guide to victory are always at the furthest point from the hole they are supposed to be going through. That is until you understand how to twist and turn the sphere to beat the laws of gravity.
  • To own the hot new toy tipped for stardom this Christmas, go for the Rubix 360.

I hope the checklist above has started you thinking about which Rubik's puzzle would suit you best. You probably should master one, just so you know what all the hype is about.
