Prevalence of Intimate Encounters Dating
As the online dating industry continues to grow by leaps and bounds, so does a particular taboo subject of the dating realm, intimate encounters. That's right, the once formerly questionable act of hooking up with random strangers has now hit the main stream. Within the past several years we have seen a handful of online dating sites dedicated solely to the casual encounters crowd. Sites like Fling.com, Adult Friend Finder and OnlineBootyCall.com have not only grown to become popular in their niche but are now even challenging the mainstream Internet dating sites.
Just recently the OnlineBootyCall site surpassed the 4 million member mark. Adult Friend Finder with its illicit sexual ads on every other website on the Internet is being hailed as one of the most visited websites on the web.
Even mainstream sites such as Plenty of Fish have seen an increase in the number of profiles that have selected the "Intimate Encounters" option. The owner of PlentyofFish, Markus Frind, stated last year that since 2004 the number of women looking for intimate encounters doubled from 9% to 18%. Now 18% may not seem like much but looking at the amount of members on Plenty of Fish, in the millions, eighteen percent is nothing to sneeze at.
So what does this say about the state of the online dating sphere? For one thing, it might not mean a whole lot, because we really don't know how effective these online hook-up sites are. There have been tons of complaints about Adult Friend Finder having fake profiles and accusations of them sending out fake promiscuous messages to its male members in order to bolster membership. In addition, for those people who are truly seeking intimate encounters on these sites, it is clear that the male to female ratio is tremendously skewed, which also questions the effectiveness of this type of dating strategy. It's hard to say what this says about online dating culture, but one thing is clear, there are definitely a lot of horny people out there.
