A Picnic in the Park
A warm summer day, a beautiful blue sky and an opportunity to spend the day at the park. It gets better. The park lies on the shore of a lake that is cool and refreshing, perfect for swimming. It sounds great and the kids are excited to go. You begin to put your things together. Some food, drinks, toys, clothes and whatever else you think you might need. You get in the car, get a nice spot on the lakeside beach and realize you have no towels.
Don't let this happen to you. If you go on an outing that is outside of your normal routine, you are much more likely to forget something. There are some easy ways to avoid this oops-I-forgot problem when you are going on an outdoor outing.
One helpful tip is to have a packing or preparation list. The internet provides a great resource for finding these. Just take the name of your activity, add the word "checklist: and put those terms into Google. You can find things like camping checklists, beach day checklists and so on. There will probably be plenty of things on a checklist you do not need, but looking it over can help you to at least remember an item or two that you might otherwise have forgotten.
Another means of avoiding forgetting something is to have some of the things you need on trips and outings already packed away. If you visit the lake during the summer, for example, you might have a bag prepared with a collection of things that you always bring. Making a generic outing bag is another option. This is easy to do for a lot of people. There is a collection of things that are always useful whether you are going to the lake, a picnic, the beach or wherever. You can go the do it yourself route in creating your take-on-an-outing package like making a box to store all of that stuff in. You can get a bit fancier too and buy packaged items for particular needs. For instance, you can get a picnic set or picnic basket to have the things you need for eating in a nice organized carrier.
I normally plan an outdoor eating party a few times a year. Not all of these are picnics. They vary from barbecues in a public park, parties at a friend's house, beach bonfires and an annual tailgate party at a football game my friends and I loyally attend. There are things I need for all of these parties, like my comfortable folding lounge chair and a nice cooler (to fill with my favorite beer!), and I keep all that stuff in a specific spot in my garage. I know that I employ both of these methods to help me avoid the trouble my forgetfulness can get me into.
However you plan and prepare for your next outing, and wherever it may be, do enjoy yourself.
