Patio Covers for All Seasons
As seasons change we use our patios and decks in different ways, but many people begin to consider patio covers as fall and winter approach in order to extend the use of their patio, deck, or garden during the cooler months. By adding a little more protection around a deck or patio it can become a functional screen room or a sunroom or have a patio enclosure that allows for sun and fresh air without the worry of wind, rain or snow entering the home.
There are many variations for practical patio covers these days and they come in a variety of price ranges, but the main ones are those that merely provide some extra shade like the open lattice patio covers and then there are the solid lattice patio cover styles and several others that are more enclosed and costly to build.
A Little Shade and a Little Sun with Open Lattice Patio Cover Designs
If your main concern is too much sun, you may not need to cover the entire patio, deck or carport, but instead use a lattice style covering that offers a little protection without eliminating all the sun. This style will not help protect from rain or snow and is very open to the elements, but may be all you need in hotter climates.
A nice addition to an open lattice patio cover, or even a carport or garden, is to have a vine or leafy plant intertwine the latticework and provide extra natural shade. The one I have over my patio has a grapevine that even provides shelter from light rain, but there are many kinds of fast growing vines that can be used to enhance a metal or vinyl or even a wood patio cover. The new versions of these lattice patio cover ideas are often made from aluminum that has been given a finish to look like wood but is weather resistant and maintenance free.
Shade and Protection with a Solid Lattice Patio Cover
In climates where winter brings rain and cooler days, perhaps even snow, a solid lattice patio cover gives extra protection from the elements. This style of patio cover is also good for a carport because it’s still open and easy to enter while keeping vehicles protected from the heavy snow or rain that may otherwise harm them. The solid lattice style of patio cover is also great for an extension over a porch or a deck, to help keep it dry when it rains and to keep patio furniture protected as well.
Although the roof of a solid lattice cover is a full roof, the walls and sides are still open and therefore if it very cold or wet, this option may not provide sufficient protection to sit outdoors and be comfortable. For moderate climates where patios need protection primarily from rain, the solid lattice patio cover designs that are made from aluminum but with a finish embossed in cedar for a wood-like appearance but without the chipping or peeling that may come from wood or painted surfaces.
Consider solid lattice patio cover designs if you live in a place where it doesn’t snow a lot and where carport can be open and still practical or where a deck just needs a covering from excessive sun and rain. If you need insulation and real protection from cold and snow, you may want to consider more fully enclosing your outdoor space.
