Best Netbooks for Kids
Netbooks are very popular with adults, having first seen the light of day as cut-down laptops designed to be sold very cheaply in developing countries. They soon spread to the rest of the world as people understood the advantage of having a small lightweight computer that they could use to access the Internet, e-mail, Facebook, etc… on the go. Asus and Dell have discovered that their best netbooks have been so popular that they have now decided to make netbooks specifically for kids too.
So, as Christmas approaches, you may be wondering which netbooks are the best netbooks you can buy for your kids. Well, the two main ones aimed at kids are the Asus Disney Netpal and the Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon (which is marketed with the slogan "have the slime of your life").
Both of these netbooks look good (at least if you are a kid, they do) but they are also practical, sturdy and have built in safety features such as parental controls and Internet security. Netbooks generally have smallish screens and these two are no exception. The screen on the Disney Netpal is 8.9" whilst that on the Dell Nickelodeon is slightly larger at 10.1".
The Disney Netpal, naturally enough, emphasizes its connection with Disney featuring Disney-inspired graphics and a webcam shaped like Mickey Mouse. It is available in two colors – Princess Pink and Magic Blue.
It also lets kids use Disney themes such as Disney·Pixar’s cast of animated characters on their desktop.
It has a range of applications made just for kids — Disney Mix, Disney Pix for editing/creating photos and Radio Disney plus a driving game, a memory game and a photo scrapbook.
The Dell Nickelodeon netbook has Nick media which lets kids stream MP3 songs and see early screenings of Nick shows. It can be customized with iCarly and Spongebob Squarepants characters, and lets kids customize games and the TV programs that can be watched from Nick.com.
Features of the two netbooks:
Disney Netpal – 8.9" screen, Windows XP Home, spill-proof keyboard and ShockShield data protection. It is available in either Magic Blue for boys or Princess Pink for girls – the price is around $350.
Dell Nickelodeon – 10.1" screen – Internal 802.11b/g WiFi, a 1.3MP webcam, 3 USB ports, plus optional external DVD drive and a 160GB hard drive. The keyboard is spill-resistant. The price is also slightly cheaper, coming in at around $328.
At the moment, these two netbooks are the best netbooks for kids on the market and would make excellent Christmas gifts if you can afford them.
