A Fundamental Weight Loss Tip

There's a useful truism to follow that is as relevant to weight loss as it is to just about anything in life. It goes something like: "What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another." When it comes to following one or other of the more popular weight loss tips that are bandied about like confetti online and off, this rule applies equally to everyone. That means that it's quite a common occurrence amongst dieters, especially those of whom live fast and very stressful lives, to fail to lose weight when another person succeeds! So what can you do to improve your odds of success?

There are some things that you can work on that are common throughout most of the strategies and techniques popularly used by people trying to lose some of their extra weight. Let's look at one of the hard and fast rules of losing weight, or more specifically weight maintenance which is not apt to change much from person to person, so that we can get a better understanding of some of the forces that are at work and how we can use them to work for us with more success.

The most fundamental truism of body weight is that weight gain will not occur as long as the number of calories being burned by the body is equal to or exceeds the number of calories being consumed.

This is an absolute fact that cannot be argued with, because it is based on the known laws of mass which say that you cannot create mass out of nothing! When associated with a person's physical mass, its obvious that you can only gain mass by consuming more than your body can use as energy for normal functioning. In that case, the excess either gets stored as fat if you lead a sedentary lifestyle, or gets added as muscle tissue mass if you work out hard with the sole aim of building up your body.

But if you only consume as much as your body uses in a normal day, you simply cannot gain weight! Your body will use the calories you consume to keep it running, for instance keeping your heart beating, your lungs breathing in and out, your metabolism and digestive system working and all the other things a body needs to do. If you add physical work to that equation in the form of exercise, then your body will need more calories to maintain its normal weight, meaning you will need to eat more to prevent losing weight!

But of you don't exercise or do physical work to force your muscles to burn as many or more calories than you consume, then the opposite happens and you will gain weight in the form of stored fat.

Knowing that fundamental fact about your body's weight should be enough to give you an understanding as to why things are the way they are and why dieting alone is not really the solution to healthy weight maintenance. Exercise must be brought into the equation as you must force your muscles to do physical work so that they can gain strength and burn the excess calories as energy to prevent your body storing them as fat.

This works for every person every time, so you only need to apply this simple basic fact to anything you do in order to lose weight and you may surprise yourself at what you can achieve!
