Diaper Bag Choices

I have always loved oversized purses, but when shopping for an extra diaper bag this past summer, I realized they are at least three times bigger than any purse I have ever carried. I guess they need to be since these days moms must tote around everything but the kitchen sink.

When I started my quest, I was not sure I would find a bag I liked. I learned quickly there are nearly as many styles of baby diaper bags as there are babies. While browsing through just one mall, I saw bags with hundreds of prints, colors, cartoon characters, professional sports team logos, and even those you could personalize yourself. I was amused to find a variety of fabrics, including plastic, cloth, faux-fur, cotton, burlap, flannel, and even cardboard.

I found a baby diaper bag to suit just about any preference. There were some for girls, boys, or twins, purses look-alikes, backpacks, and some newer designs with something called a wrap-around that attaches to strollers or shopping carts. They come in handy when you do not have three hands. I even saw a diaper bag they were marketing toward fathers. One model was called the “Diaper Dude” and it had a strap that would fit nicely across a man’s chest. I did not peek inside, but I suspect it had a built in radio so dad could catch a sporting event while chauffeuring his freshly diapered child around town.

There were so many choices, although I admit to wishing they made a baby diaper bag that actually diapers a baby. Prices are reasonable, unless you just have your heart set on a designer label. I finally settled on one with a Disney character with the wrap-around feature mentioned above.

In case you are not looking forward to shopping for a diaper bag, you should know about the free diaper bag you can get from Enfamil by registering on their web site for a Family Beginnings Kit. You can also do a quick Google search for other companies offering complimentary diaper bags – and other products – to qualified new parents.

Speaking of the Internet, there are tons of web sites devoted to all things diaper bag. If I had not needed the extra exercise walking around the mall gave me, I would have shopped in bedroom slippers from home. Next time I might just send Dad of the Diapered Daughter.
