What Do Criminal Attorneys Do When Their Clients Are Guilty?
I am a Seattle DUI attorney. The majority of my clients are charged with misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, or low level felonies. Many of my clients, when they come in, tell me that they have committed the crimes they are charged with. And all of them want to know how I can help them and are scared about the punishment they face.
So, what do I do, as a Seattle DUI attorney, when I know my clients did what they are accused of? I try to get them off. Keep reading to find out why.
That's right. You heard me correctly. The text isn't playing tricks on your mind. I try to get the charges of every one of my clients dismissed outright. This means they receive no punishment for their wrongdoing (or face little punishment in exchange for the charges being dismissed), and walk away scot-free.
How can I do this, you might be asking. What about justice? What about doing what is right? What about the victims or paying for your mistakes? I am all for each of those concepts, but my job as a criminal defense lawyer is not to care about those concepts. My job as a criminal lawyer is to help out my client in the best way possible, regardless of theoretical concepts like justice and fairness. So I do just that, I try to get my clients off without any punishment at all.
Sometimes I am able to get the charges dismissed. Often, this is the result of the police acting improperly with my client, violating their constitutional rights. Other times the proof isn't there. And other times I just get lucky. And my clients are pretty happy about the outcome. And I am happy with it too, because I've done my job, I've done what I would want done for me if I was facing criminal charges.
Often, though, my clients are caught dead to rights. Either they've confessed, they were caught red-handed, or some other circumstances exist which make it impossible for me to get the charges dismissed. In those cases I try to minimize the damage, getting the least punishment allowable (which sometimes results in the end with dismissal). The way I see it, everyone is entitled to one or two bad decisions in life, and they shouldn't have to pay for those bad decisions forever. I work to help them move on with the least problems possible.
