Don't Be Concerned. Male Hair Loss Is Not Inevitable.
The good news is that if you're a man, hair loss is not inevitable. Over the last few years, the mechanisms of male pattern baldness have been well established by science and there are some excellent hair loss treatments that are now approved by the FDA and which are extremely effective. If you're a man, the most important thing to remember is that hair loss can be treated, but baldness cannot.
Male pattern baldness is by far the most common cause of male hair loss. For men between 20 and 45, 95% of problems with thinning hair are the result of inherited male pattern baldness. Men's pattern baldness is technically called androgenic alopecia. You inherited genes from previous members of your family.
Although for a long time it has been known that male pattern baldness was genetic, the actual mechanism which created their hair loss was not understood at all. Once this mechanism was fully understood, it was possible to develop an excellent male hair loss treatment.
The mechanism behind male hair loss is this: The male hormone testosterone is converted into a hormone called Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT for short. DHT is produced by the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. It is the DHT which causes the hair loss. This is now fully understood by science.
The way this happens is that the DHT gathers around the base of the hair follicle and effectively strangles the follicle. By preventing the flow of essential hair nutrients to the hair follicles, DHT causes hair follicles to weaken, to reproduce less successfully and for the hair strands to thin.
Everyone loses hair every day. The average person has around 10,000 hairs falling out per day, however these are normally replaced. Those affected by an excess of DHT around the hair follicles will lose more hair and less hair will grow to replace it. The result is a gradual thinning of their hair, resulting in a bald spot.
Once all the above was fully understood, a successful treatment was possible. The FDA has approved one treatment by the name of minoxidil. Minoxidil is available under a range of product names, but not all minoxidil products work the same.
I have already mentioned the importance of good nutrition to hair health. Although minoxidil blocks the effects of DHT and this frees up their hair follicles to take in enough nutrients, if there are insufficient nutrients available, the hair cannot do this. Minoxidil does not supply the nutrients.
The very best hair loss treatment on the market uses minoxidil to interrupt the operation of DHT but at the same time it also supplies a wide range of essential hair nutrients as oral supplements. This two-edged approach is far more effective than simple minoxidil on its own.
So remember, if you're a man, hair loss is not inevitable. You cannot grow hair on a bald head so it's important to act fast. The best modern hair loss treatments do work exceptionally well.
