Why your Blog needs to be on Twitter
It doesn't matter if you own one blog or hundreds of blogs. Your blog posts need to be showing up on Twitter. Why? Well, when Google says they're going to make the tweets appear in search engine results and your blog posts don't appear there, you're going to be left behind.
Straight from the Horse's Mouth
Google announced it on their Official Google Blog: RT @google: Tweets and updates and search, oh my! You should take a few minutes to read it and let it sink in.
When this finally starts happening, chances are that the Twitter tweets will be indexed by Google faster than most blog posts. I have one blog that only gets crawled once every two weeks. Consequently, it may take two weeks for a recent blog post to appear in the SERPS. Publishing the post title and link on Twitter would mean the two week wait wouldn't matter.
Feed Twitter your Feeds
There are two ways to get your blog post information into a tweet: 1) Manually and 2) Automatically using a third-party service.
If you have only one blog and you can remember to do it, you can manually tweet the post title and link yourself. If you have more, or you have a blog like Post Your Own Articles, it won't be so easy.
I use Twitterfeed to do the dirty work for me. There are other third-party services that do the same thing, but they're usually tied to a desktop Twitter client. I prefer to keep my choices of applications separate.
I have five blogs, including this one, being fed to Twitter. I started doing it less than 12 hours ago and Twitterfeed already reports (on the dashboard at the site) multiple bit.ly clicks for each one.
Will it Affect your Blog Ranking in the SERPS?
I honestly don't know, but I seriously doubt it. It has already proven to me that it will definitely increase your social traffic. If you monetize your blog (or blogs) through social traffic, this is a good thing. If you monetize through search traffic, it may not make a difference other than quick indexing. That is, provided the Googlebot follows the bit.ly link to the source.
Regardless of the outcome, it can't possibly hurt your blog. Will it get you more Twitter followers? Who cares?

I think I am too stupid to understand all this. Please tell me my life is not going to involve Tweeting!
No, you don't have to tweet anything if you don't want to. Just make sure you get your blog posts onto it. That's why I use Twitterfeed… so I don't have to be on there all the time.
